Overview

Explore the raw and untouched part of the Himalayas by joining the Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trek 21 days. Trek with an experienced native guide and discover hidden valleys, stunning alpine lakes, ancient monasteries, and picturesque villages. Travel far away from any modern city and go off the grid in nature: an excellent trip to enjoy nature and stunning mountain vistas and rejuvenate.

Tsum Valley is a hidden valley in the Manalsu region that ascends to Mu Gompa and Ganesh Himal Base Camp. Likewise, the Manaslu Circuit takes you to the base of the eighth-highest mountain in the world, Mount Manaslu (8,163 m/26,781 ft), and crosses the Larkya La pass. You will explore the rich Tibetan Buddhist cultural heritage and meet with Gurung, Nubri, and Tsumba communities.

What to expect during the Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trek 21 days?

Starting the trek from Soti Khola, the trail ascends for a few days via rhododendron forests and small villages. From Ekle Bhatti, the trail turns to Tsum Valley. Climb to Mu Gompa (3,700 m/11,026 ft) and also visit Ranchen Gompa. Retrace the route back to Lokpa and join the Manaslu Circuit trail.

You will then trek via landslide areas, glaciers, and moraines to Larkya La, pass, and descend to Dharapani, the end. On the way, take two acclimatization breaks at Sama Gaon (3,520 m/11,548 ft) and Samdo village (3,875 m/12,713 ft). During your rest day in Sama Gaon, you will hike to Pun Gyen Gompa (4,800 m/15,748 ft), exploring the Pungyen Glacier on the way.

Likewise, you will also visit the Manaslu Base Camp (4,400 m/14,435 ft) and come across the stunning Birendra Lake. Samdo is a Tibetan refugee village. From here, you will hike to Rui La Pass (4,998 m/16,398 ft) for acclimatization. It is an old trade route. Enjoy isolated trails and beautiful mountain and glacier views.

These two rest days are crucial before you cross the Larkya La pass (5,160 m/16,929 ft). It will help you avoid altitude sickness and also allow you to rest and recover for the final major climb. The trail to the top of the pass is steep and rocky. You will walk on narrow tracks covered with snow.

Once you reach the top, a jaw-dropping mountain panorama will unfold before you. From here, you will descend for two days and end the trek in Dharapani (1,860 m/6,100 ft). The next day, drive back to Kathmandu. The elevation will gradually increase as you trek from one village to another. Dense forests will change into pastures, and you will ultimately touch the alpine zone.

Landscapes will vary throughout the trail. Mountains like Ganesh Himal (7,422 m/24,350 ft), Singri Himal (7,817 m/25,646 ft), Annapurna II (7,937 m/26,040 ft), Boudha Himal(6,672 m/21,889 ft), and many others dominate the trekking route. The wilderness of the region, peaceful trails, and fresh air will unwind and rejuvenate you.

Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trek difficulty and altitude sickness

Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit is a challenging trek in Nepal. It covers approximately 177 kilometers. Trekkers experience varying terrains and climates. The terrain is offbeat, steep, and rugged. There will be frequent ascents and descents throughout the journey. Starting the trek from 700 meters, you will ascend to 5,160 meters.

The high elevation gain makes walking more difficult because you will be exposed to thin air and low oxygen levels. It also increases the risk of altitude sickness, so trekkers have to adjust as they trek to avoid it. Good fitness is needed, as daily 6 to 7 hours of trekking are required.

Trekking in the Himalayas is very different from trekking in other mountain ranges around the world. The environment is far more challenging. The Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trek route has tea houses where you will spend the nights. However, the facilities are minimal, so you have to adjust a lot.

Walking in and out of the region is the only way to travel. You cannot get any transportation service. In case of emergency, we use a helicopter to evacuate you. If you feel sick or in any discomfort, inform your guide. He will provide you with first aid.

If the situation does not improve, we may transfer you to the hospital in Kathmandu or Pokhara for more medical care. Do not think this is an extreme case; anything like this rarely happens.

Manaslu circuit Tsum Valley trek preparation

After reading the above information on difficulty, you may understand the challenges of the Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trek. Participants have to be physically and mentally fit to complete this trek. The toughest part is walking long hours if you do not have a habit of doing so.

On top of that, you will navigate offbeat terrain, which requires strong stamina and endurance. So, previous trekking experience is required. Having an understanding of the Himalayan terrain and walking hours will not surprise you on the Manaslu Circuit.

If you are not physically ready for the journey, you can exercise and improve your strength and stamina. Regular long walks and activities like cycling, swimming, hiking, and running are beneficial too. These activities will also enhance your stamina and prepare you mentally for the trek.

Who can do the Manaslu Circuit trekking?

The Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trek best suits those with previous trekking experience. Beginner trekkers should not do this trek as their first in the Himalayas. The tre is very demanding physically and mentally. Every day, you have to trek 6 hours on offbeat, steep terrain. Likewise, high altitude and Larkya La crossing are also no jokes.

Fit, experienced trekkers will join the trek to the fullest. It is a very high-altitude trek. You will go over 5,000 meters, and constant climbing is required. So, if you have any breathing issues, we recommend visiting your doctor before joining the trek. If you fit our fitness and experience requirements, then there is no age limit.

At least two trekkers are required. If you are a solo traveler, then we will pair you up with someone else or put you in a group.

If you have any questions regarding this, feel free to contact us.

Are you ready for the trek?

The Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trek lasts 21 days and is a life-changing and demanding trip. You will witness the best landscapes but also put in a lot of effort walking. If you are ready to leave the comfort of the modern world and open to adjusting to the remoteness of the Manaslu region, then you are ready for the trek.

The network along the trail is not good. You will go off the grid for many days. Our guides carry satellite phones for emergency communication with the office team.
