Mani Rimdu Festival Trek 2025:

The Mani Rimdu festival is one of the major celebrations of the Sherpa people and other communities of the Khumbu region. It is celebrated once a year in the Tengboche monastery. The festival lasts for three days and often takes place in the autumn season.

The Mani Rimdu festival marks the victory of Buddhism over Bon. The festival begins with an empowerment ceremony (wong). Lamas bestows blessings upon the attendees. On the second day, masked dances (cham) are performed. Each dance carries profound meaning. The last day of the festival is the puja ceremony.

Our representatives will welcome you at the airport on your arrival. Meet them at the terminal gate after completing the visa obligation. They will help you with the luggage and transfer you to the hotel in a private car. Freshen up and rest. In the late evening, we will meet for a welcome dinner.

We will fly from Kathmandu to Lukla early in the morning, enjoying fantastic mountain views. It will be a short flight but packed with thrill. Upon landing at Lukla airport, porters will join our group. We will then trek to Phakding village. The trail descends, crossing several suspension bridges. We will trek through lush forests and small villages such as Cheplung and Thado Koshi Gaon.

*Note: You may take a Lukla flight from Ramechhap Airport instead of Kathmandu Airport during the peak trekking seasons (spring and autumn). It is because of very high air traffic. In that case, you will leave the hotel in Kathmandu around 2:00 AM and drive to the Ramechhap airport

From Phakind, trek to Namche Bazaar, the biggest Sherpa settlement. The trail continues from rhododendron forests and passes by villages like Toktok and Monjo. Before reaching Monjo, we will also cross the long Tenzing Hillary suspension bridge. The permits are registered in Monjo, and from here, follow an uphill route that gets steep near Namche Bazaar.

We will spend this day in Namche Bazaar acclimatizing. Hike to the Hotel Everest View early in the morning to witness a lovely distant view of Mt. Everest along with Ama Dabla, Lhotse, and Nuptse. From here, you can further hike to Khumjung monastery or return to Namche Bazaar. Later in the day, visit the Sherpa Culture Museum and Everest Photo Gallery.

The trail continues to Kyangjuma and descends from here to Phungi Thanga. We will cross a suspension bridge and gradually ascend via pine and rhododendron forests to Tengboche monastery. It is the biggest monastery in the Khumbu region with significant importance. The trail offers stunning mountain views. Likewise, the view of Mt. Ama Dablam and Mt. Everest is excellent from Tengboche.

From Tengboche village, we will descend for 45 minutes to reach Deboche. From here, the trail further drops to Imja Khola. Crossing it, we will follow a lush forest to Pangboche village. Here, visit the ancient Pangboche monastery. Further, trek via terraced fields, enjoying closer views of the mountains to Dingboche.

Today is our second rest day. We will go on a hike to Nagarjuna Hill or Chhukung Valley. Both hikes are offbeat but offer jaw-dropping mountain views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Island Peak, Kangtega, etc. After the hike, we will spend the remaining day in Dingboche village resting.

The trail follows an uphill route from Dingboche to Dughla Pass via Thukla. The views of barren hills, glaciers, and snow-covered mountains are phenomenal along the way. We will walk on the glacier to reach the top of Dughla Pass. Further, the trail goes past memorial chortens to Lobuche village, offering fantastic views of Pumori, Lingtren, and Khumbutse.

Today, we will reach the Everest Base Camp. From Lobuche village, continue trekking along the Khumbu Glacier moraine. The trail is steep and rugged. The horizon is mostly surrounded by rocky hills and huge mountains. We will leave our heavy luggage in Gorak Shep and trek from here to EBC. To spend the night, we will return to Gorak Shep.

Early in the morning, we will begin hiking to Kala Patthar. As the day breaks, the ray of sun on the mountains makes the view out of this world. Upon reaching the top, we will witness a superb view of Mt. Everest and many other mountains.

Return to Gorak Shep and trek from here to Pheriche. Follow the same route back to Dughla Pass. From here, trek to Pheriche following a different route. The mountain views are wonderful throughout the trail.

  • Trip information about Kathmandu to Lukla to Kathmandu flight

The Everest trek includes flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Sometimes the weather of Lukla becomes bad, at which time the flight cannot take place. So, in this case, there may be delay or cancel of the flights. You will have to be prepared for this.

This does not always happen, but may sometimes happen depending on the weather condition. The weather of Lukla is unpredictable, that’s why we recommend you to have a few more days after the trek in case the flight is delayed or cancelled.

If you have tight schedule, it will be hard to manage your return flight. So, even the trip days 16 days, we recommend you to have 2-3 extra days. If the flight does not happen for 2-3 days, then we will divert you to Annapurna Base Camp Trek and Kathmandu to Pokhara flight for your benefit.

We also recommend you to have an extra budget for helicopter charter to return back from Lukla to Kathmandu. The helicopter cost is 3500 USD charter flight. It will be approx 650 USD per person which can be paid via cash or credit card.

  • All the domestic flight will get diverted to Ramechaap to Lukla and Lukla to Ramechhap during the month of March, April, May, September, October, November and December due high air traffic and high volume of tourist problem in domestic flights. In this case you have to get up early at 1:00 am in the morning and the airlines sharing bus will be waiting for you in Thamel. It will take you to the airport timely.

Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek permit:

You need two permits to do the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek. They are the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entrance permit, and the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit. Both permits are included in our EBC package cost.

Sagarmatha National Park entry permit cost: Nrs 3,000 per person

*Note: If you trek from Jiri, an additional permit is required. It is called Gaurishankar Conservation Area permit and costs Nrs 3,000 per person.

Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek difficulty & altitude sickness

Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek is a moderate trek that gets a bit challenging once you are above Dingboche village. Following our Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar itinerary, you can trek avoiding altitude sickness because there are two acclimatization days in it.

Be attentive towards your health and inform your guide if you see symptoms like headache, difficulty in breathing, vomiting, insomnia, nausea, etc. Drink plenty of water and beverages like ginger tea, lemon tea, hot water with lemon and honey, etc to keep yourself hydrated.

Every day, you will walk 6 hours on average, so maintaining your pace is very important. Carefully navigate the trail to avoid any injuries. The trail ascends from dense forests to glacier moraines. Likewise, as the altitude increases, you will get tired easily. Make sure you are having enough good food.

Is travel insurance needed for the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek?

Get travel insurance with helicopter evacuation and medical bill coverage for the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek. You have to buy travel insurance in your country. Check the policy of the travel insurance and make sure it covers trekking in the Himalayas. Give us a copy of your travel insurance before the trek starts.

Accommodation and meals during the trek

During the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek, you will spend nights in lodges along the trail. This package includes basic lodges with twin-shared rooms. Washrooms can be private or common. The rooms will be clean and cozy. Additional services like hot showers, WiFi, charging, etc, may cost you a few extra bucks.

*Note: You can upgrade the accommodation to a luxury lodge at an additional cost.

For meals, you will get breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the trek. In Kathmandu, you will get all breakfast and one complimentary farewell dinner. During the trek, the menu will be quite extensive, ranging from pizza, burger, pasta, and steak to dal bhat, thukpa, momo, Tibetan bread, etc. You will drink boiled drinking water.

What is the best time to do the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trekking?

The best time to do the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These two seasons have ideal weather and climate for trekking. The weather is not that unpredictable, and the climate is moderate. Likewise, the clear sky offers stunning mountain vistas. The lower part of the trail is decorated with seasonal flowers and vegetation. And most importantly, you will not face cancellation on the Lukla flight.

Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek in winter (December to February)

You should have at least one contingency day in your itinerary in case your flight to Lukla gets affected because of unstable weather. During the winter season, the cold is extreme, and daylight hours are low. You have to start trekking early. The mountain views are mostly clear, but there can be days when you may not get to see any nice views because of fog. The trails are empty, so that is a bonus.

Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek in summer/monsoon (June to August)

Summer/monsoon makes trekking to Everest Base Camp quite challenging. With poor weather and heavy rainfall, the trail is all wet, muddy, and slippery.
